Education community welcomes Hodgman Government early learning initiative

The Hodgman Liberal Government’s goal is to lead the nation in education and create a job ready generation.

To do this, the Government is breaking the cycle of disadvantage through education. We are committed to improve education outcomes in Tasmania, to give our children a brighter future.

The Government has instigated a new Education Act, will extend 38 schools to year 12 by 2018, increased retention and increased Year 12 completion, and is investing in more support staff and more teachers in our schools.

We are now re-shaping access to early learning in Tasmania to ensure disadvantaged and vulnerable children get the best possible start in life.

Our Working Together for 3 Year Olds, which will provide free access to quality pre-school programs for eligible three- year old children from 2020, has been widely welcomed by the education and early learning community.

It’s pleasing to see the Minister taking on board the evidence and data which has come out of the consultation with the Early Childhood Education and Care sector and changed his approach”

Children’s Commissioner

This decision is a sound investment in a brighter future for many Tasmanian children who currently need extra support.  Education is the key to our future prosperity and quality early learning is a great place to increase our investments”

Early Childhood Australia

“This is a win for Tasmanian children, especially those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged”

Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham “The Hodgman Government deserves enormous credit for focussing on early learning and pursuing all possible options to ensure young Tasmanians are as prepared as possible to succeed at school.”

The Hodgman Government has listened to Tasmanians, and we have acted. We know it’s simply not good enough that some Tasmanian children have up to two years less education than other states, so we are providing earlier access to play based learning in a different way.

Sadly, what our Plan has highlighted is Labor has NO Plan for education, NO policies and NO ideas except to deliver a net loss in the number of child and family centres they promised in 2009.
