Easing pressures on the LGH

The Hodgman Liberal Government is taking action to resolve pressures at the Launceston General Hospital.

A number of improvements have either been made, or are in the process of being made, that will address demand and ease pressure on our hard-working staff.

These measures include:

  • The implementation of a Transit Lounge at the the LGH to assist with managing patients awaiting discharge.  This is now in place with patient flow improvements already being seen, which in turn is releasing beds quicker.
  • An increase in nursing staff levels on Ward 4D, which has enabled the staffing of extra beds, bringing the total to 24 permanent beds, with five flex beds available as needed.
  • Recruitment of Assistants in Nursing to undertake appropriate duties and ease the pressure on current workload; and
  • Undertaking a review of the LGH demand escalation policy

The THS has also commenced a review of the work, health and safety concerns that staff have raised in relation to security, and additional casual Support Officers will be employed while this review is undertaken.

The THS and I understand the concerns of staff and the Government will continue to consider ways to support our patients and our busy, dedicated staff.

These actions will build on the measures we have already undertaken since coming to Government that has made a real difference to the LGH such as reopening all the wards that Labor closed, restarting a hospital in the home program after they shut it down, and opening new elective surgery theatres.

But we know there is more to be done, which is why we are boosting health by a record $757 million over the next six years to open more beds, employ more staff and build more health infrastructure to expand services – including a new Women’s and Children’s Precinct for Launceston and a brand new ward at the LGH.
