Driving tourist road safety

Tasmania’s tourism industry is booming, and it’s vital we help keep our visitors safe as they tour our highways and byways.

It was my pleasure to launch the next stage of the Government’s Tourist Road Safety Strategy today with the unveiling of a new tourist road safety billboard at Launceston Airport to help ensure our tourists understand our road rules to keep themselves and the community as safe as possible.

Our Tourist Road Safety Strategy aims to educate tourists by providing important road safety information in a simple and effective way, and the billboard featuring our now world-renowned tourist road safety mascot Bobbie the Lavender Bear will certainly get the attention of visitors to our state.

Other new initiatives of the strategy include:

  • Electronic Bobbie the Lavender Bear billboards in airport terminals
  • Bobbie the Lavender Bear information hangers and ‘drive to the left’ stickers to be placed in hire cars
  • A new look safe-riding-in-Tasmania brochure and a new short film about safe riding aimed at visiting motorcyclists
  • Materials available in multiple languages.

The Government is a strong supporter of our tourism industry, and these new initiatives will build on the measures we have already taken to ensure tourists return home safely after visiting our great state.

For more information on the Tourist Road Safety Strategy, including Bobbie the Lavender Bear materials and the motorcycling safety short film, go to www.rsac.tas.gov.au.

Safe driving advice featuring Bobbie the Lavender Bear has been made possible through a unique partnership with Bridestowe Lavender Estate. Working with our gateway airports, the Spirit of Tasmania, the Tasmanian Motorcycle Council and the hire car industry will take Bobbie’s road safety messages to even more visitors.
