DP World Announcement welcomed

The proposal to develop an international container terminal at the port of Burnie has taken another step forward with an agreement between DP World and TasPorts.

The Hodgman Government welcomes this announcement, which if it progresses would create jobs and boost economic growth in the North West.

It is also evidence of the increased confidence and growth in our economy.

We are supportive of any announcement that promises to invest in Tasmania to increase our competitiveness and increase our presence in the marketplace.

The proposal will provide our primary producers and local agribusinesses with easier access to the world’s markets, where they will be able to capitalise on the sale of their world-renowned products in the global marketplace.

This is great news for the North West Coast, as this development would improve the port’s container capacity, and open the port up to additional international container shipping lines.

DP World have said that around 40 new positions would be created to operate the terminal, and this would expand over time.
