Disaster Recovery Allowance Welcomed

A large number of Tasmanians experienced a loss of income as a direct result of the June floods.

Coordinator of the Tasmanian Flood Recovery Taskforce, Commander Peter Edwards, welcomed the Australian Government’s Disaster Recovery Allowance activated today.

“Financial assistance is a key part in the recovery and rebuilding journey,” Commander Edwards said.

“The Disaster Recovery Allowance is now available for eligible employees, small businesses and primary producers following the June floods.”

Commander Edwards said the purpose of the Australian Government’s Disaster Recovery Allowance was to provide short-term income support to people who could demonstrate their income had been affected by the June floods.

“I encourage Tasmanians affected by the floods to look into the financial assistance that may be available to them,” Commander Edwards said.

Commander Edwards said that eligible people would be able to get income assistance for up to 13 weeks, to the maximum rate of the Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance.

“All levels of Government are working hard to help affected communities get the support they need, as soon as possible, so they can get back on their feet.

“This is one of the many assistance packages that are being made available,” Commander Edwards said.

“Further information including full eligibility requirements are available on the Commonwealth Department of Human Services webpage – www.humanservices.gov.au/disaster
