Developing the Building Surveyor industry in Tasmania

Tasmania’s building and construction industry is essential to Tasmania’s economic revival under a Hodgman Liberal Government, employing more than 22,000 people across the State, compared with just 16,100 in the last year of the Labor-Green Government.

That’s why we’ve set a target to increase the number of people employed in the building and construction sector by 25 per cent over the next five years.

With the Liberal Government’s $2 billion infrastructure investment in major works and capital upgrades for public infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, and our target to continue to increase investment in infrastructure, the building and construction industry will continue to grow under a Liberal Government.

A growing building industry requires investment in skills and training and that’s why we are contributing $300,000 to help get new building surveyors to enter the industry.

Feedback from practising building surveyors has shown that the average age of the current workforce is steadily increasing, and there are very few new surveyors entering the profession.

The Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS) has identified that the largest barrier to entry for surveyors is difficulty getting time off work to study for the qualifications required to progress in the profession.

To address this barrier and encourage younger workers into the profession, the Hodgman Liberal Government's contribution will deliver six, two-year cadetships across the State.

Two cadetships will be offered in each of the North West, Northern and Southern regions of Tasmania.

Funding will be provided to businesses to employ and mentor an individual while they undertake the necessary qualifications.

The program will support new entry building surveyors as well as enhancing the qualifications of existing surveyors to meet industry needs.

The cadetships will be advertised by direct invitation to every licensed building surveyor in Tasmania, and the AIBS’ Tasmanian chapter will assist in the selection of applicants.
