Delivering on our Gonski Promise

This week's State Budget will deliver on our promises, fix the budget mess and lay the foundations for our future.

Today, we can confirm the State Budget will include Tasmania's single biggest investment in education.

A record $1.4 billion will be injected into education over the next year alone, and $5.8 billion over the forward estimates.

This significant investment in education highlights our government's commitment to improving education outcomes and creating a job ready generation.

This is a stark contrast to the former Labor Green Government that failed Tasmanian students and left us with a legacy of some of the worst education outcomes in the country

Our investment in this State Budget is $57 million more than what the Labor Green Government would have spent in 2014-15.

In fact, our budget will deliver $308 million more in education funding than Labor and the Greens promised in their last budget.

We can also confirm our budget will include $134 million over six years to fund the State Government's contribution to the full six years of the Gonski education reforms.

Since the March election we have already started delivering on our promise to extend rural high schools to year 12, with six taking up the first round. Just last week we announced we are already asking for more schools to extend in 2016.

We have also delivered on our election commitment to employ 25 new literacy and numeracy specialist teachers. They are already working with students in years seven and nine.

We understand that if we can lift education we can lift Tasmania.

We said we would support Gonski, and this week's budget will prove that.
