Delivering health services that Tasmanians deserve

Every Tasmanian deserves to have the best health services available.

While the Government has invested in over 300 additional frontline health staff over the past three years, is opening more than 120 hospital beds, and has reduced elective surgery waiting lists to the lowest level ever, we understand there is more to do.

As part of our Plan to Build Your Future, a re-elected majority Liberal Government will set two ambitious new major targets for health:

  1. 90 per cent of Tasmanians will be treated within clinically-recommended timeframes for their elective surgery by the end of the next four year term of Government;
  2. 90 per cent of emergency presentations will be in and out of the Emergency Department within four hours by the end of the next four-year term of Government.

This will see nine out of ten Tasmanians get their surgery on time, and be given faster care in our Emergency Departments, including quicker admission to a hospital bed where required.

Over three years, we have made important improvements in areas of our health system, and have delivered a 78 per cent reduction in people who have waited longer than the recommended time for surgery.

The number of presentations to hospital Emergency Departments has risen significantly, yet we are managing to keep the rate of people departing in four hours stable at around 65 per cent.

This is a testament to the hard working and dedicated staff in our hospitals, and we are determined to do even better.

We have built a strong foundation, but we know not everyone is feeling the benefits, so we are building on this with our ambitious targets to take us to the next level.

Meeting both these new targets will be achieved by our continued efforts to open more beds and recruit more health professionals – which is backed by our record $7 billion health Budget.

Having access to the best health services available is a key driver behind the $689 million Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment, which once complete will provide capacity for an additional 250-beds.

Investing in health is a priority for us because we know it matters to Tasmanians and between now and the election, we will be announcing more policies which will help us achieve these ambitious goals.

Under the Hodgman Government’s Plan to Build Your Future we are making our state an even better place to live.
