Data Centre Action Strategy

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of Tasmania’s ICT sector which is integral to the ongoing growth of the Tasmanian Economy.

Today, I was pleased to release the Government’s Data Centre Action Strategy.

Data Centres are a crucial requirement of the digital economy.

Global growth in data centre investment is set to increase exponentially to keep pace with the growing utilisation of cloud based technology solutions.

The Government has previously tasked the Office of the Coordinator-General with attracting a Tier 3 Data Centre to Tasmania, as part of its plan for growing our ICT industry. The recent announcement by Red Cloud, a Tier 3 data centre, that now looks likely to occur.

We know there is significant global competition for this type of investment but we also believe that Tasmania has a number of natural advantages which provide a competitive platform for attracting this activity.

The Data Centre Action Strategy recognises Tasmania’s natural advantages, but also recognises that more work needs to be undertaken, both in the attraction and promotion activities, to ensure the State has the best supporting environment and infrastructure.

Through the work of the Office of the Coordinator-General and other stakeholders 12 strategic actions are detailed that together provide a strategic approach to fostering further data centre investment within Tasmania.

This strategy is not intended to be a short term endeavour but rather reflects the Government’s long term commitment to developing this sector and the jobs it can create.

A copy of the Data Centre Action Strategy can be obtained from the website of the Office of the Coordinator-General at: http://www.cg.tas.gov.au
