CSC partnership delivers new TasTAFE IT course

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to delivering innovative and contemporary education outcomes that lead to jobs, and the partnership between TasTAFE and CSC is a great example of that.

Last year the Tasmanian Government entered into an agreement with UXC Limited to establish a Service Desk Centre of Excellence in Hobart.

In March 2016, CSC acquired UXC Limited to form one of Australia’s largest IT service companies and the Hobart-based Centre now employs 46 people and this is expected to grow to 55 FTEs by the end of October.

To help meet the demand for skilled IT workers, CSC and TasTAFE have jointly developed a new TasTAFE course – Certificate IV in IT Support.

As well as providing traditional IT technical skills, the course has a strong focus on customer service and includes a 4-month placement for students in the Hobart Service Desk Centre of Excellence.

The Centre is part of an investment by CSC to further advance its customer support capabilities for major clients in Australia, New Zealand and the US.

CSC has sought permission from some of its major clients to allow the students to work in a training room within the Centre so that they can have a true real-life learning experience.

The pilot began in July and students have completed a month of work placement with the next course intake due in November. They will complete the course with practical, job-ready skills and a real knowledge of the industry.

TasTAFE and CSC have collaborated on all aspects of the Certificate IV in IT Support course – from what is taught, through rostering and how students are supported.

We congratulate CSC and TasTAFE in helping to nurture the next generation of IT workers.

This is a great example of collaboration between two can-do innovative organisations that is mutually beneficial and creates real training and employment opportunities for Tasmanians.
