Coroner Report

I note today’s release of the Coronial Report into the death of infant Bjay Johnstone.

This is a terrible tragedy and I extend my sympathies to all affected.

The Government will now carefully consider all the recommendations and act accordingly, noting that we have already significantly increased resourcing since coming to Government, and have commenced a redesign of the Child Protection System.

I note that the Coroner has made specific findings against Child Protection Services, saying “there were extensive failings” in the system, with “inadequate staff numbers and a lack of training… preventing effective responses”. I want everyone to be clear that this incident occurred under the watch of the former Labor-Green Government, in 2012.

While unlike Labor I will not seek to politicise this, I have no doubt that had this tragic event occurred while I was Minister, instead of Ms O’Byrne, I would be facing calls for my resignation.
