Outcomes from a report on the first round of public consultation of the new Primary School in Legana found that it should be a hub for families and community members in West Tamar.
The first round of public consultation was held earlier this year, and through this the community has already started to shape the new school by providing valuable feedback on the features and spaces they would like included.
People told us the school should have quality sporting facilities and music, drama and creative spaces, publicly accessible recreational areas and good transport connectivity.
Suggestions were also received on the preferred location for the school and the Department of Education is currently working in partnership with the West Tamar Council to secure a site at one of these locations.
Our partnership with the Council and the local community is vital to ensuring the new school will be one we can all be proud of when it opens to students for the first time in 2024.
West Tamar Mayor Christina Holmdahl said the new school was needed, as indicated by the Legana Structure Plan and would be welcomed by the growing suburb of Legana.
“We completed the new Legana Main Street in 2019 as per our vision for Legana, and look forward to being able to extend that through working with the Department of Education to co-locate recreational facilities with the school.”
“Residential development is moving quickly in Legana and we need to ensure the community has adequate infrastructure to encourage and support the growth of the area and its interests.”
Further public consultation will be held in early 2021 to ensure the community can provide feedback on the concept plan for the school once it’s developed.
