Consultation on New Environmental Licence Regulations for Fish Farms

The Hodgman Liberal Government is continuing its commitment to strengthen and streamline the management of our important salmon industry.

Today, I am pleased to announce that the public consultation period for the proposed Environmental Management and Pollution Control (Environmental Licences) Regulations 2018 has begun.

The Regulations will support the various amendments made to the Act in December 2017 in relation to the environmental regulation of finfish farming by the independent Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

Under the tighter regulations, all marine and inland fish farms will in future require an environmental licence, consolidating the EPA’s environmental conditions into one regulatory instrument.

This should give the community, industry and markets greater confidence regarding ongoing environmental accountability in this sector and builds on the work being delivered through our sustainable growth plan for the salmon industry.

Consultation is open until 29 June 2018 and a copy of the draft Regulations can be viewed here: http://epa.tas.gov.au/epa/news
