Consultation on making the Devil our official emblem completed

The consultation period on the idea of making the Tasmanian Devil our state's official animal emblem has been completed.

In January the Government announced that we were considering the idea and would conduct public consultation before making a decision.

The idea of making the Tasmanian Devil our state's first official animal emblem has attracted a large amount of positive discussion and debate.

We have been encouraged by the level of interest in the idea from Tasmanians, and I am advised that there has been a very strong level of support in the submissions for the Devil being recognised in this way.

More than 65 submissions were received and we will consider all of them before making a decision. I expect to be in a position to make a public statement later next month.

Tasmania is currently the only state not to have an official animal emblem. The Devil is recognised around the world as uniquely Tasmanian and we believe it is a very worthy contender to be our first official animal emblem.

Declaring a formal faunal emblem provides states and territories with an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and promote their unique native fauna.
