Consultation Forum to Enhance Throughcare for Offenders

A stakeholder workshop held in Hobart today on throughcare for offenders is another important step in achieving continual improvement in Tasmania’s corrections system.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is investing in the Corrections system in Tasmania to ensure that our community is as safe as possible.

Throughcare focuses on the needs of each individual and adopts a coordinated, collaborative approach in order to reduce the risk of reoffending and facilitate successful reintegration into the community.

Throughcare covers offenders who enter the corrections system from the point of their initial contact through to completion of their sentence and return to the Tasmanian community.

Representatives from around 50 non-government organisations today participated in a consultation forum which considered the future direction of corrections and offender management in Tasmania.

The forum was an opportunity for key stakeholders to provide information, exchange views and consider key strategies to guide the development of throughcare initiatives over the coming years.

The Liberal Government recognises the need for continual improvement in our corrections system to build on the work done since the release of the Palmer Report in 2011.

As well as focusing on areas like throughcare and rehabilitation, we are also investing heavily in our prisons. Additional funding of $9.2 million was provided to the TPS in 2014-15 and 2015-16; and to date we have recruited 65 new correctional staff in 2014 and 2015, with further positions currently being recruited right now.
