The Hodgman Liberal Government acknowledges the major contribution ageing Tasmanians make to the social and economic growth of Tasmania, which is why we are developing Tasmania’s first Active Ageing Plan.
In May 2016 the Tasmanian Government funded the Council of the Ageing Tasmania (COTA) with $125,000 to undertake research and consultation with older Tasmanians and the community to help develop the Plan.
Today we can launch COTA’s Active Ageing: Strategic Directions Paper which is the culmination of consultation with almost 650 Tasmanians aged 50 and over.
COTA is the peak body representing and advocating for the interests of older people living in Tasmania and we thank CEO Sue Leitch and her team for their efforts.
The key findings of their Paper show:
Findings from this Strategic Directions Paper will be used to develop the Plan which will have four pillars to support people to age well – health, lifelong learning, participation and security.
The Plan will aim to empower older Tasmanians to age well by promoting opportunities, giving them knowledge and skills to make informed choices and recognise Tasmania’s need for ongoing contribution for people 50 and over.
It is anticipated the final Plan will be released in May 2017.
