Construction starts on Mowbray Connector upgrades

Construction on the $7 million Mowbray Connector Intersection upgrade starts this week, improving safety and traffic flow on the East Tamar Highway.

With a growing economy and more people in work, there are more people on the road. This busy intersection needs to be made safer and help traffic move more freely, allowing people to get to their destination without avoidable delays.

The work includes installing a roundabout, without the need for traffic lights, to replace the current outdated turning arrangement at the intersection of East Tamar Highway and Mowbray Link in Tasmania’s north.

The roundabout will make turning much safer and easier for road users travelling in and out of Mowbray Link, and has been designed to allow traffic travelling north past the intersection to do so directly, without even entering the roundabout.

Once complete, a consistent 80 km/h speed limit will be applied on the East Tamar Highway between Forster Street and Mowbray Connector (northbound) and between University Way and Forster Street (southbound).

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is rolling out our $51 million Traffic Vision for Launceston and the Tamar Valley over the next five years, which will see a reduction in congestion, improved safety on our roads, and travel reliability.

The Vision includes taking over the management of Bathurst and Wellington streets couplet and the sections of York and Brisbane streets that connect the couplet to Kings Bridge and the West Tamar Highway.

During the works on this latest project on the East Tamar Highway, the highway and Mowbray Link will remain open, with a reduced speed limit and regular lane closure.

Work is expected to be completed by April 2020.
