The passing of new laws in the Police Offences Act 1935 today in Parliament is another big win for safety in Tasmania.
The Hodgman Liberal Government has a tough on crime approach and we are committed to keeping our state safe and making Tasmanians’ lives better.
That’s why we are continuing to give police the tools they need to crack down on Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs and send a clear message that organised crime gangs are not welcome in Tasmania.
The new laws replace the current offence of consorting contained in the Act, with a more contemporary offence that aligns with legislation in other jurisdictions. It creates a new consorting offence to prevent serious criminal activity by deterring convicted offenders from establishing, maintaining and expanding criminal networks.
What has been incredibly disappointing in this process is Labor’s shameful attempt to again stop our outlaw bikie gang legislation.
After suggesting they would support the bill, they tried to have it withdrawn in the Legislative Council last night – twice.
After trying to stop our insignia bill last month, Labor’s shameful politics has continued with this bill.
Instead of listening to the advice of Tasmania Police, the Police Association of Tasmania and the NSW police force, Labor has confirmed yet again they are soft on crime.
