Work on the new Flinders and Cape Barren islands phone and data connectivity is set to get underway through a $10.6 million upgrade to their telecommunication infrastructure.
As part of the Flinders and Cape Barren Islands Telecomms Transformation Project, it will see the island communities receive phone and data connections on par with urban metropolitan areas.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is supporting the project as a member of the partnership that includes the Federal Government, Telstra and the Flinders Council.
The project will see upgrades to the islands’ infrastructure including replacing the ageing radio network with a state-of-the-art microwave radio link, installation of a fibre backbone and 3G and 4GX mobile capability at eight mobile sites.
With the need for effective telecommunications infrastructure in order to keep pace with the demands of business, education and health care, the current situation on Flinders Island is substandard and will be fixed.
This will ensure service improvements for individuals, families, businesses and communities.
The Hodgman Government thanks the Flinders Council for its vision and determination in seeing this project through and their financial contribution to the project.
We are delighted that our seed funding, promised in the 2014 election, has directly led to this once in a generation outcome.
The Federal Government must be applauded for its $7.9 million contribution through the Building Better Regions Fund.
This grant will enable the Island community to flourish into the future.
