Community members sought for new Place Names Advisory Panel

The Tasmanian Government is seeking members of the community with an interest in place naming to join the new Tasmania Place Names Advisory Panel.

The Advisory Panel replaces the Nomenclature Board when the new Place Names Act 2020 comes into effect on 1 July and is responsible for assessing Tasmanian place naming proposals.

Expressions of interest are being advertised on Saturday 16 May to appoint up to three community membership positions.

The new Act requires one person with knowledge and experience in outdoor recreation and up to two people with knowledge and experience in heritage or historic matters and/or orthography and/or linguistics.

Once established, the panel will comprise the Surveyor-General as Chair, a state service employee with primary responsibility for the state’s spatial data and mapping, a Parks and Wildlife Service representative, a person nominated by the Local Government Association of Tasmania, one person with knowledge and experience in outdoor recreation and up to two people with knowledge and experience in heritage or historic matters, orthography or linguistics.

Expressions of interest for the community membership positions close on 29 May 2020. Successful applicants will be appointed for a period of three years.
