Community feedback sought on Lower Gordon River Recreation Zone Plan

With our parks and reserves currently closed due to COVID-19, the Tasmanian Government is planning for the future when we can all enjoy our stunning natural spaces again.

Accordingly, Tasmanians are being invited to help shape a plan for the lower Gordon River that will provide sustainable visitor experiences while protecting the natural and cultural values of one of the most visited locations in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

With over 100,000 visitors enjoying the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park each year, there is no doubt it is one of Tasmania’s iconic nature-based destinations and we need to manage and protect it so future generations can experience it too.

A report is now available to help guide discussions on the new Recreation Zone Plan, and I invite everyone to read it and have their say on the proposed reforms.

The report provides information on the current issues affecting the lower Gordon River, which will help to inform submissions from the public. The submissions received will then be used to guide the development of a Draft Recreation Zone plan.

Key issues include ensuring visitation by motorised vessels is consistent with the protection of the river’s fragile banks, while also maintaining a quality wilderness experience.

Further public consultation on the draft plan will be held later this year when safe to do so in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Feedback can be submitted to gordonriverplan@parks.tas.gov.au or by post, addressed to: Lower Gordon River Recreation Zone Plan, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, GPO Box 1751, Hobart TAS 7001. The feedback period closes on 22 June 2020.
