The Premier, the Hon Will Hodgman MP and the Minister for Women, the Hon Jacquie Petrusma MP joined other First Ministers, Women’s Safety Ministers and the Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, at the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) National Summit on Violence Against Women in Brisbane today.
The National Summit brought together political, business and community leaders to Connect. Act. Change.
The Premier and Minister were joined at the National Summit by a number of Tasmanian delegates, including members of the Family Violence Consultative Group and those who are delivering programs and services under Safe Homes, Safe Families, Tasmania’s Family Violence Action Plan 2015-2020 (Safe Homes, Safe Families).
The Premier and Tasmania Police Commissioner Darren Hine APM presented on the nation leading Safe Homes, Safe Families and its flagship initative, the Safe Families Tasmania Coordination Unit, as part of a National Showcase at the National Summit.
The Summit also featured a series of roundtable conversations on topics such as technology-facilitated abuse, innovative uses of technology, Indigenous insights and experiences of violence, diverse experiences of domestic violence and the effects of domestic violence on children.
A highlight of the Summit was the launch of the Third Action Plan, Promising Results 2016-2019, of the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children 2010-2022.
The Third Action Plan sets out an ambitious agenda for achieving the change that is needed to reduce domestic, family and sexual violence in Australia.
The Third Action Plan comes at a critical time, the half-way point of the National Plan, when there is unprecedented community momentum calling for violence to stop.
Tasmania is well placed to address the national priorities outlined in the Third Action Plan through the ongoing implementation of Safe Homes, Safe Families.
