Climate Symposium kicks off in Hobart

It was my pleasure today to open the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC) Symposium being held in Hobart over the next two days.

The Symposium brings together some of Australia’s most prominent climate and Antarctic researchers to strengthen connections between science and user needs.

The Tasmanian Government has a strong history of support for the ACE CRC, and we recognise how critical their work is when envisioning what Tasmania’s future might look like in a changing climate.

That work includes delivery of the Climate Futures for Tasmania (CFT) project, which is the most important source of Tasmanian climate change projections at a local scale

The ACE CRC has also been contracted by the Tasmanian Government to examine the impact of climate change and strengthen our fire-fighting techniques specific to our wilderness areas.

They will seek to determine whether the regional weather patterns that resulted in the extreme fire conditions seen in the TWWHA this past summer are more or less likely under future climate change scenarios, and therefore whether there is likely to be an increase in fire danger in the TWWHA area.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to practical action on the serious issue of climate change, and we will continue to partner with organisations such as the ACE CRC to ensure we have the best possible advice in the future.

A climate change action plan will be released by the end of 2016 and will include actions aimed at reducing Tasmania’s emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change.
