Children aged 4-11 can access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) from July 1

The NDIS will help give young children aged 4-11 years old the ability to participate in the broader community from 1 July 2017, giving them and their care givers more choice and control around their care needs.

The NDIS will no doubt improve these children’s lives, just like it already has for 1877 Tasmanians.

With the Budget back on track the Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to supporting people with disability and their carers. We are investing $750 million to fund the NDIS over the next four years.

And what we are doing is working - Tasmanian NDIS participant and carer satisfaction is above the national average. According to a recent report, 89 per cent of our NDIS participants are reporting very good satisfaction - exceeding the national average.

So far, 2114 young people have been found eligible for the NDIS, with 1877 participants with an approved plan in Tasmania.  As at 31 March 2017, 616 approved service providers are ready to help support people with disability in Tasmania.

Existing Commonwealth and state or territory-based services and supports will continue until eligible people start to receive supports from the NDIS.

In each year of the three-year NDIS roll out, the number of Tasmanians in the NDIS will roughly double and reach around 10,600 by mid-2019. Importantly, clients of Tasmania’s specialist disability services can continue to access existing supports until they move to the NDIS.

Importantly, the ongoing expansion of the NDIS is a great opportunity for Tasmanian jobseekers with around 1750 jobs expected to be created in the disability services sector.
