Today it was my pleasure to turn the first sod on much-needed toilet amenities at the Chigwell Community Garden.
I was delighted to assist the not-for-profit facilitator of the project, the Bucaan Community House, in successfully applying for $10,000 from the Premier’s Discretionary Fund.
The addition of accessible, modern and private toilet and hand washing amenities will better cater to the needs of all community garden users, including people living with a disability, the elderly, children, staff and volunteers.
The Community Garden is much loved in Chigwell and is a place where locals come together and build their social networks, learn new skills, broaden their knowledge about healthy eating and share ideas.
It is also enjoyed by schools, childcare centres, disability providers, aged care facility residents and community groups.
The garden plays an important role in the community by promoting the growing, sharing, cooking and eating of nutritious, low cost, fresh produce.
Coordinators expect participation to increase, new garden plots to be leased, and more events and activities to be held at the site because of the addition of the amenities.
The Premier’s Discretionary Fund provides recognition or support for cultural, sporting and social organisations and is aimed at fostering community participation, pride and diversity.
