Channel Highway upgrade

The Tasmanian Government is investing in the infrastructure we need to drive economic growth, create jobs and make it easier for Tasmanians to travel safely.

One important area of investment is cycling infrastructure.

We have committed $5 million over the next four years to improve safety along popular cycling routes on State roads, starting with the Channel Highway at Bonnet Hill.

I am delighted that works have now commenced on this section of highway which is very popular with cyclists, including myself.

The construction program will create a space for cyclists to travel more safely through the uphill sections of Bonnet Hill, improving safety for all road users.

The Bonnet Hill Community Association has been a strong voice on this issue and we have listened.

As the local Member for Franklin I’m looking forward to seeing the contractors get construction underway this summer.

I also acknowledge the work of my Denison colleague and House of Assembly Speaker Elise Archer who has campaigned to secure this outcome as a local MP.

Construction works will extend the sealed shoulder, with new line markings, to the left hand side of the uphill sections of Channel Highway between Proctors Road to Baringa Road.

I recognise there will be some disruption and delays while works are underway and we ask that road users show patience.

The Department of State Growth is working closely with key stakeholders including Kingborough Council, local schools, businesses and the community to manage this disruption.

Improving road safety is a priority for the Government, and the strong focus on vulnerable road users, including cyclists, is about saving lives.

By providing improvements to existing popular cycling routes, we will build on the momentum and the gains we have already made in cycling safety across Tasmania.

Earlier this year we rolled out new advisory signage with the message ‘Pass Cyclists Safely’ to help improve the safety of cyclists on popular cycling routes across the State, and changes were made to the Tasmanian road rules to allow motorists to cross centre lines to pass cyclists, when safe to do so.
