Chance to explore the universe at Ulverstone

If science helps to expand our horizons, this weekend’s TAStroFEST will take us out of this world.

The three-day festival of astronomy at Ulverstone celebrates Tasmania’s clean, clear skies – perfect for gazing at the stars – with a unique line up of lectures, workshops and free events.

On behalf of the Government, I was pleased this morning to officially open the festival, which promises to “revel in the staggering complexity of the universe and be in awe of its beauty”.

Linked to National Science Week, to be held later this month, TAStroFEST is sure to spark an interest in science, and particularly in the field of astronomy, in Tasmanians of all ages.

Science is a key part of the curriculum in our schools, and is supported by the Government because it not only provides a range of career paths for our young people, but it also supports our industries to grow and to adapt.

Whether for agriculture, aquaculture, or mining, science helps to provide the answers.

While some events are already booked out, I encourage people to get along to TAStroFEST and explore what Star Trek dubbed our “final frontier”.
