Centenary of ANZAC: Tasmanians Remember

Today thousands of Tasmanians gathered to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first landings at Gallipoli.

We honour those who have served, and especially those who have lost their lives doing so, in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations since.

One hundred years on, and every year on this day, we commemorate this catastrophic campaign and remember the brave first ANZACs. 15,000 Tasmanians enlisted in World War 1, and sadly 2,432 never came home.

Today, Tasmanians in their thousands right across the State, came together to honour those courageous men and women.

ANZAC Day is a most poignant and emotive occasion, and the 100th Anniversary was made even more special with the dedication of a new Flame of Remembrance at Hobart’s Cenotaph.

I congratulate the RSL for their commitment and perseverance in seeing this long held dream become a reality.

I am extremely proud that my Government was able to support the project, which will be an enduring symbol of our gratitude for those who have served our nation. It also gives Tasmanians and visitors a place to reflect and remember.

This new Flame of Remembrance will ensure we never, ever forget.
