Cemetery burglary is a disgrace

Tasmanians have every right to be outraged by the burglary at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery on Monday which could significantly impact the Tasmanian Headstone Project.

This not-for-profit group has been meticulously making headstones for World War 1 veterans lying in un-marked graves in the cemetery.

This project recognises the sacrifices of these veterans with 316 unmarked graves identified at Cornelian Bay and more than 500 state-wide. Already nearly 200 headstones have been erected at Cornelian Bay and an official unveiling ceremony was planned in just 2 weeks.

The theft of vital equipment is a huge setback for this dedicated team of volunteers and we can only hope that community support and information can help police quickly relocate this vehicle and machinery.

All Tasmanian servicemen and women and their families deserve our respect and support – not this mindless act which is an insult to our fallen veterans.
