Celebrating Planet Ark’s Tree Days

Sustainable Timber Tasmania (STT) is continuing Forestry Tasmania’s proud history of supporting Plant Ark’s Tree Day events, with around 8000 seedlings donated to schools around the State.

Today, I was pleased to join with STT chief executive Steve Whiteley and students at Herdsman Cove Primary School to plant trees for Schools Tree Day.

Schools Tree Day is a great hands-on opportunity for students to experience planting and caring for seedlings as they grow and, in doing so, to help beautify or provide more shade or shelter at their school.

This also teaches about the importance of trees to our environment and the value of wood as a natural, renewable and beautiful resource.

Half of Tasmania – or almost 3.4 million hectares – is forested. Our forest management standards are world’s best practice and we plant three trees for every single tree that is harvested.

Our productive forests provide employment for a great many Tasmanians and support regional communities around the State.

I commend all schools involved in this year’s Schools Tree Day and Forestry Tasmania for its ongoing support of the event.
