Celebrating Harmony Day

Harmony Day is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise Tasmania’s diverse culture.

In its 18th year, Harmony Day brings together our different cultural groups and recognises the rich social contributions that make Tasmania the great place it is.

The Hodgman Liberal Government aims to foster an inclusive, cohesive and open society where differences in backgrounds, cultures and religions are valued and respected.

According to the 2016 census, 61,000 or 12 per cent of our population was born overseas.

They represent 170 countries, speak 129 languages and practice 24 religious faiths.

The Government is committed to supporting cultural and linguistic diversity and as part of this we are providing $1.2 million over four years to CatholicCare Tasmania to run the Safe Haven Hub that provides educational support and employment, as well as pathways to refugees on temporary protection visas; and $1 million over four years to the On-Island Support Program for new refugee arrivals across Tasmania.

Australia is one of the most multicultural nations in the world and I encourage all Tasmanians to celebrate Harmony Day.
