Celebrating Albuera Street's centenary

A century of learning for Hobart's students is being honoured today with the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Albuera Street Primary School.

This is a terrific achievement for any institution, but particularly for a school that has played such an important role in educating so many Tasmanians and that continues to serve its community.

Albuera Street Primary School is in the heart of Hobart, and was originally situated next to the Anglesea Barracks, across the road from where it now stands today.

For the centenary celebrations, the school community has gathered stories of its twists and turns over the years, which paint a colourful picture of not only Albuera Street's history but also of Tasmania's development.

Today, Albuera Street caters for more than 250 students from Kinder to Year 6 with a focus on "inspiring, creating, achieving".

On behalf of the Government, I was pleased to join in the celebrations at the school today and I wish Albuera Street Primary School every success for its next 100 years.
