Medicinal cannabis decision

I welcome the Commonwealth’s announcement today that it would legislative for a nationally-consistent licensing scheme for the controlled cultivation of medicinal cannabis.

The Tasmanian Government has been working closely with NSW on this issue, and advocating for a consistent, national approach through COAG.

While we have yet to see the detail of the proposed new legislation, it appears to be a very significant step towards bringing long-awaited relief for Tasmanian families who treat their loved ones with medicinal cannabis.

We look forward to working with the Federal Government and other states on opportunities for growing medicinal cannabis in Tasmania.

Tasmania has already proven to be a world leader in the cultivation of alkaloid poppies, supplying half of the world’s demand.

The Government will continue to work closely with the Commonwealth and other states to progress this issue.
