Candlelight Vigil to Remember Lives Lost to Family Violence

Tonight’s candlelight vigil to remember those who have died due to domestic or family violence will also serve as an opportunity to change attitudes.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to working with the community to create a safer environment for women and children, free of violence.

A staggering one in three Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15 and one in five women have experienced sexual violence.

Tragically, this year alone, 34 women have lost their lives at the hands of someone close to them.

Worryingly, the 2013 National Community Attitudes towards Violence Against Women Survey found that one in five people believe there are still situations in which women bear some responsibility for the violence.

The simple truth is that there is never an excuse for this violence, and tonight’s vigil will highlight just how serious this issue is and how we must all work harder to protect women and children.

The Hobart ceremony, which has been held annually since 2009, is one a number to be held across the country.

The Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, and Tasmania Police Commissioner and White Ribbon Ambassador Mr Darren Hine will join us at the vigil tonight, while Dr Shannon Spriggs will be the MC.

The vigil will be held at Franklin Square in Hobart at 5.30pm.
