Call for new recruits to join ranks of the TFS

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to supporting our dedicated firefighters who have highlighted recently their skill and tireless efforts in protecting lives and property.

Under this Government, frontline firefighter numbers have not only been maintained, they have been increased.

This week, a new recruitment drive has commenced to ensure the ranks of the Tasmanian Fire Service (TFS) remain strong.

Advertisements appeared in the State’s three major newspapers today seeking applications from those wishing to become career firefighters.

The TFS plans to recruit nine trainees to meet projected requirements based on staff movements over the past 12 months and anticipated departures over the next year.

When they have completed the 15-week course, the new recruits are expected to take up positions in the South and North-West.

This follows last year’s successful trainee course, which saw nine new firefighters posted around the State with two stationed in Launceston, four in Devonport and three in Burnie.

The Government is continuing to invest in strengthening our emergency services and backing those on the frontline.

The first year of our historic, $28.5 million cross-tenure fuel reduction program, the most comprehensive ever undertaken in Tasmania, left us better prepared than ever as we headed into what has become a very active bushfire season.

We have also committed $15.3 million to the Emergency Services Computer Aided Dispatch project, aimed at improving the safety and effectiveness of all emergency workers, including firefighters.

Those who take up this exciting opportunity to become a career firefighter will know that they have the strong support of their Government and their community.
