Call for additional Aboriginal Heritage Council members

The Hodgman Liberal Government is calling for three more members for the Aboriginal Heritage Council to advise the Government on policy and to promote greater understanding of Aboriginal cultural heritage.

Established in August 2017 under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1975 (the Act), the Council plays a valuable role in helping to protect and manage Aboriginal heritage in Tasmania.

The role of the Council is to directly advise the Government on policy and procedures, and to promote public understanding and awareness of Aboriginal cultural heritage, and to provide advice on matters including land management and permit applications for development proposals.

Nominees must be eligible under the Tasmanian Government's Aboriginal eligibility policy, with consideration also to be given to the regional and gender balance of the Council.

The Hodgman Liberal Government has deep respect for Tasmania’s first people and the role of the Aboriginal Heritage Council as a statutory body reflects this.
