Bushfire Recovery Taskforce Final Report

The Tasmanian Bushfire Recovery Taskforce has handed over its final report into the fires that affected Dunalley and other parts of the state in January 2013.

The recovery is not over and the support will not stop, but the Transition to Long-term Recovery report marks the conclusion of the taskforce.

I thank the taskforce chairman Damian Bugg and its members for doing an exemplary job.

The report highlights the work undertaken since the fires damaged or destroyed more than 300 properties.

The lessons learnt from the recovery effort will inform future support for communities recovering from an emergency.

In addition work is progressing well in delivering the 103 recommendations made by the 2013 Bushfire Inquiry.

Of the 30 priority recommendations 28 have been delivered; and the final two will be delivered by the end of this year.

Of the remaining 73 recommendations 17 have been fully implemented; 17 will be implemented by July; 21 are due by the end of December; and four are due by July 2015.

Fourteen recommendations are yet to have dates set, 12 of which are dependent on the completion of the emergency managements arrangements review (recommendation 100).

The Liberal Government will be making an announcement over coming weeks on our election commitment to increase fuel reduction and reduce bushfire risk.

Meanwhile, progress is continuing to be made in Dunalley with many in the regions still rebuilding their homes.

Another important step is the rebuilding of the primary school, which will begin in July and is expected to be complete mid next year.

The Dunalley Information and Services Hub will close in a few weeks, which reflects that the community is now at a different stage in its recovery.

Red Cross volunteers and community sector agencies will be door-knocking over the next few days to ensure people know where to go for service.

Support services will continue to be available to existing and new clients through dozens of non-government services and health organisations.
