Building Your Future – the Hodgman Government’s plan to increase home ownership

The Hodgman Government is committed to helping more Tasmanians own their own home.

Earlier this year, we released a New Housing Incentive Package, to make it easier for Tasmanians to build and own their own home.

The Package included:

  • A $20,000 First Home Builders Grant;
  • Stamp duty relief of around $7500 on the average cost of a standard “off the plan” house and land package;
  • Simplifying planning rules and building regulations to make it easier to build a home and increase housing stock; and
  • Assessing all Government-owned land to see what land can be released to help reduce the cost of building a home.

The Package of reforms is working and Tasmania currently has the highest rate of home ownership and some of the lowest median housing prices of anywhere in the country.

But of course, the best thing that any Government can do to help more people buy their own home is to make sure the economy is growing and there are job opportunities.  Under the Hodgman Government, over 11,000 jobs have been created and the economy is growing at the fastest rate in years.

But we know there is more to do.  That’s why a re-elected majority Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to keeping the rate of home ownership at five per cent above the national average.

We will continue to work hard to keep the economy growing and to help keep the cost of building your own home as low as possible.

We will have more to say on this in the lead-up to the next election, but Tasmanians know that we will do everything we can to help more people buy their own home.
