Building the workforce to deliver 10 year infrastructure pipeline

The Hodgman Liberal Government is delivering on our plan to create jobs and build much needed infrastructure with the State’s first ever detailed 10-year Infrastructure Pipeline.

Accordingly, two new initiatives to deliver the skilled workers Tasmania needs have been agreed at the second Tasmanian Construction Industry Roundtable held in Launceston yesterday.

The initiatives agreed to are:

  • to implement training for specific needs identified from the recent survey of the industry conducted by the Tasmanian Building and Construction Industry Training Board; and
  • establish an industry working group to match skills gaps against the 10 year infrastructure pipeline.

These initiatives will help ensure Tasmania’s workforce has the skills needed to deliver the increased infrastructure investment the Pipeline will bring, resulting in thousands of jobs across the state for Tasmanian jobseekers.

The 10-year Infrastructure Pipeline provides a once in a generation opportunity to build Tasmania’s future with record spending planned across both state and federal governments, as well as the private sector.

The roundtable includes industry peak bodies, government organisations responsible for the delivery of workplace training and development, and government infrastructure providers. Following yesterday’s discussion, work will now begin to deliver the initiatives in consultation with all key stakeholders.

The roundtable also expressed support for the Government’s existing actions in this space, such as releasing skills funding to further address immediate shortages and skills gaps in the industry and engaging more specialist government staff to ensure efficient and effective project/tender management.

The Government thanks all members of the Tasmanian Construction Industry Roundtable for their commitment to delivering the Pipeline and we look forward to further work as we deliver on our plan to improve the lives of Tasmanians.
