Building Reforms to Support Booming Property Market and Job Creation

A booming real estate sector and a bumper tourist season will encourage further investment in Tasmania’s building and construction industry as the Liberal Government’s nation-leading building reforms come into effect.

Gaining approval to build in Tasmania is now faster, fairer, simpler and cheaper with the commencement of the new Building Act and its new approach to cutting red tape, which will help to create jobs – our number one priority.

Under the majority Liberal Government, Tasmania is open for business and we are seeing growing confidence across industries and across the State.

Strong growth in real estate sales and a record increase in the value of homes sold, together with reports of tourist accommodation being booked out, highlight the demand for new investment.

Our building reforms will help developers – whether they are businesses wanting to build new hotels or families wanting to renovate their homes – to realise their plans.

Developed in close cooperation with the building and construction industry and hailed by the sector itself as “nation-leading”, our reforms mean licensed builders and plumbers no longer need council building permits for a range of works, up to and including two-storey homes.

This is about saving time and money for industry and consumers alike and encouraging rather than discouraging development.

Those looking to invest on the back of record real estate sales and a booming tourist sector can now do so with greater confidence than ever before.

That means more jobs not only in those industries, but also in building and construction, which already employs close to 20,000 Tasmanians.
