Building affordable housing and creating jobs

As part of the Community Housing Stock Leverage Program, Stage 1 of Green Point Road in Bridgewater is now well underway, with 16 houses to be delivered - 10 under the Stock Leverage Program (all targeted to priority applicants), and six under the Better Housing Futures Program (mix of social, affordable and new homes for sale).

With 172 new properties and 31 substantially upgraded properties expected to be available under the program by 2019, and completion of these houses in Bridgewater anticipated by December 2018, the program will see 230 jobs created in the construction sector, with a direct injection into the Tasmanian economy of $34 million and an overall benefit of more than $90 million.

As part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s Plan to Build Your Future, a re-elected Hodgman Liberal Government will increase the number of apprentices and trainees in the private sector by 40 per cent by 2025.

As well as increasing the supply of community housing, our innovative Community Housing Stock Leverage Program is giving apprentices involved in the project an opportunity to enter the construction industry or reskill through this initiative, under the Build Up Tasmania Project where unemployed/disadvantaged youth are given an opportunity to gain skills and knowledge they wouldn’t normally have access to, through to employment via the Rosny College VET Programme.

Only the Hodgman Liberal Government has a Plan for apprenticeships and traineeships, and a strong record of job creation, with the number of apprentices employed in the building and construction sector up 14 per cent year-on-year and growth in both the traditional trades and civil construction areas.
