Bruny Island Neck Improvements

Bruny Island has become one of Tasmania’s most loved tourist destinations, and the Hodgman Liberal Government is acting to ensure its vital infrastructure remains as modern and safe as possible.

To that end, I am pleased to advise that the public will soon have an opportunity to comment on the   proposed upgrades at Bruny Island Neck.

The planned upgrades include sealing the final 2.5 kilometre section of the Neck road, improved safer crossing facilities for penguins and a larger, relocated car park.

These proposed improvements will ensure the Island keeps up with tourism demand while increasing road safety for locals, tourists and wildlife alike.

The plans include an upgraded, relocated car park that will accommodate increased visitor numbers and improve traffic flow and safety for road users and pedestrians.

Wildlife biologists have also provided specialist input into the road design which includes under-road culverts to provide safe crossing points for penguins.

Construction work is subject to development approval by Kingborough Council and is proposed for mid-2017 to minimise impacts on both the penguin breeding season and peak tourism period.

Details of the public display will be advertised throughout the community during January 2017 with the proposed designs to be displayed for public comment on 3rd February 2017 at the Alonnah Community Centre.

More information about the project can be found on the project webpage at www.transport.tas.gov.au/road/projects.
