Brooker Highway upgrades to boost safety, efficiency, access for pedestrians

Pedestrian access and safety will be significantly improved along the Brooker Highway in Glenorchy thanks to a $32 million upgrade now underway.

This afternoon I was pleased to represent the Infrastructure Minister, Rene Hidding, to mark the beginning of works on the Brooker Highway project, alongside Senator Eric Abetz, representing federal Minister Warren Truss.

Along with community members, I had long campaigned prior to my election as a local Member and since my election for safety to be improved on this section of the Brooker, particularly for pedestrians at the Howard Road intersection from Goodwood.

Importantly, the replacement of the roundabout with traffic lights, including crossings with countdown timers, and other upgrades, will not only improve safety, it will also make access across the highway much easier, particularly for people living with disabilities and parents with prams walking their children to Goodwood Primary School who cannot use the overpass with stairs.

It is hoped this will also encourage physical activity through the enjoyment of our great local community infrastructure, such as the beautiful Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park and the Boardwalk.

When completed, the upgrades will also boost safety for motorists and make travelling on the Brooker Highway far more efficient, saving time and money for local businesses.

Jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian governments, this is another great example of what we can achieve by working with our federal colleagues, and I know Senator Abetz has also been a strong advocate of the project.

Whilst travelling through roadworks can be frustrating, we do thank motorists in advance for their patience as we all look forward to seeing the upgrades completed next year.
