Breathing new life into Sassafras Church

Congratulations to Sassafras volunteers for their work transforming a historic church building into a multipurpose centre for the benefit of the entire community.

The Sassafras Community Hall Association and its volunteer committee managed the conversion of the 140 year-old building into a cultural and historical centre which I opened today.

The Association has worked innovatively with community to preserve this heritage.

The result is a fresh way to repurpose a historic building so that it better meets the needs of today’s community.

The Tasmanian Government strongly supports local communities – they are the heart and soul of our regions. And projects like this help to foster community connectedness.

The project was funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund, the Latrobe Council and through the Association itself.

Tasmanians are known for their selflessness with past research showing we lead Australia in rates of volunteer participation. The social, cultural and economic value of volunteering to Tasmania is conservatively estimated at almost $5 billion.
