Breast cancer awareness month

October is breast cancer awareness month, and as the Minister for Women I encourage as many Tasmanian women as possible to make an appointment this month and have a potentially life-saving mammogram.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Tasmanian women, and approximately 400 Tasmanian women will find out this year they have breast cancer.

This is why early detection is vital, as when breast cancer is diagnosed early through screening, treatment is more successful.

With more than 5,400 women overdue for their screening appointment, now is the time to take 20 minutes out of your day to look after yourself and potentially save your life.

All Tasmanian women over 40 should have a free breast screen every two years and there are extra breast screening appointments available during October - breast cancer awareness month.

Women can call in to the Hobart clinic, at Level 4, 25 Argyle street, Hobart during October to make their appointment.  Free screening appointments are also available in Launceston, Glenorchy and Burnie.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to improving health outcomes for all Tasmanian women, and BreastScreen Tasmania is jointly funded by the Australian and State Governments under the National Health Partnership Agreement.

I encourage all Tasmanian women to make an appointment near you today by calling 13 20 50.
