Boost for Tasmania's only ice rink

Today I visited the Glenorchy Ice Rink to discuss planned improvements for the facility, including the purchase and installation of solar panels.

The Liberal Government is providing $23,095 towards the upgrade, which was a commitment I secured for Denison during the election.

The addition of solar panels will reduce electricity costs and enable the owner to keep Tasmania's only ice rink open, as it enters its 35th year of operations.

The Glenorchy Ice Rink is used for recreational, figure and synchronised ice skating, as well as ice hockey and ice basketball.

In addition to the Figure Skating Association of Tasmania and Ice Hockey Tasmania and their members, Tasmania's only rink is popular with schools, community groups and families, and the wider community.

As can be seen at today's Tasmanian Artistic Figure Skating Championships 2014, the state's reputation for excelling in figure skating nationally is well deserved, but wouldn't be possible without the Glenorchy Ice Rink.

The Liberal Government is delivering on its promises and I am pleased that thousands of Tasmanians who use the rink can continue to enjoy it into the future.
