Bill tabled to remove remissions

The Hodgman Liberal Government is acting on our commitment to prevent the early release of prisoners under remissions granted through the Corrections Act 1997.

Tasmanians would be shocked to learn that one out of every four prisoners is released before their sentence is completed, and it has been of significant concern to the Government that remission allows offenders to be released up to three months before the date handed down by the Court.

The Corrections Amendment (Prisoner Remission) Bill 2017 has today been tabled in Parliament that will end this outdated practice and remove remissions for prisoners, in line with community expectations.

The Department of Justice is working to develop alternative models for incentivising good behaviour in prison before the removal of remissions from July next year.

The heat is now on Labor’s inexperienced leader Rebecca White- will she finally stand up for the victims and back these important reforms, or will she again side with criminals and let offenders back on the streets before they serve their sentence.
