Bigger Things Project Gets Underway

The Liberal Government is committed to improving the education, training and skills qualifications of all Tasmanian students.

Our Partnership Agreement with the University of Tasmania to deliver the Bigger Things project is just one way we are working to achieve this.

The project aims to ensure that young people who are at risk of not continuing their education have the aspirations, support and skills to successfully transition to tertiary education, training and employment.

The pilot will involve students from feeder primary schools, the Huonville High School and the Hobart College for the five years to 2018.

The pilot will support students, teachers and parents through:

  • A mentor program to build career aspirations;
  • Career expos and UTAS Open Days to encourage students and parents to learn more about university courses;
  • Information about financial assistance to study at UTAS;
  • Improving bus services between Huonville, Hobart College and UTAS, and a trial of WiFi on buses;
  • Tutoring assistance; and
  • Professional development for teachers on their role in encouraging students to further their study at university or TasTAFE.

The Bigger Things project will support our Government's initiative to extend high schools to Year 11 and 12. Six schools will start delivering this from next year, including Huonville High School.

The Liberal Government is committed to creating a job ready generation.

We are working hard to support the creation of job opportunities in all regions of Tasmania, and we are backing our competitive strengths including tourism, agriculture, aquaculture and forestry, which are abundant in the Huon Valley.
