Helping Tasmanian students achieve their full potential is a commitment of the Hodgman Liberal Government and today’s opening of the new Launceston Big Picture School is a great example.
With our State Budget under control we are able to focus on the essentials, such as Education.
The Launceston Big Picture School involves the transformation of Launceston City Campus into a stand-alone Big Picture Demonstration School. It has its own dedicated school Principal and a newly-established School Association. The school logo has been developed by students and includes the Head, Hand and Heart as representing strong intellectual purpose for each and every student.
The school continues to offer Big Picture education for students from Years 9 to 12 providing an alternative approach to learning, but with its own school leadership and student enrolment guidelines.
The Big Picture philosophy is a personalised approach to education encouraging students’ individual interest and active participation in combining academic work with real world learning.
The Launceston Big Picture School builds on the existing strengths and collaborative activities of the Department of Education and Big Picture Education Australia with a five-year demonstration pilot.
Thank you to the school community, students, parents and staff for working constructively and collaboratively in helping to forge a future for the school that will meet the needs of its students.
It is also exciting to involve the Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment in this pilot to evaluate the outcomes of the school and ensure it continues to support students to reach their full potential.
The Big Picture demonstration school is only the fourth of its kind in Australia, with existing schools in Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales.
Other Tasmanian schools, including Kingston High School, Montrose Bay High School, Ogilvie High School and Sorell School, continue to offer Big Picture learning opportunities to students.
