Best wishes to students for NAPLAN

Young Tasmanian students will today take part in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, and I wish them the very best.

Improving literacy and numeracy is a priority for the Hodgman Liberal Government, and the NAPLAN is an important snapshot of how young Tasmanians are performing.

Around 25,000 Tasmanian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be tested across Government, Catholic and Independent schools.

While there have been recent improvements and the gap with the national average is narrowing, we must always strive to do better.

We are committed to turning this around, for Tasmania to be at or above the national standard in every NAPLAN measurement by the end of six years of majority Liberal Government.

That’s why we introduced 25 literacy and numeracy specialist teachers in Tasmanian schools to target students in Year 7 and 9 who are consistently performing below the national average.

We understand that a good education gives young Tasmanians the best chance at getting a job and living a fulfilling life.
